Julian Sands in a Celebration of Harold Pinter

Julian Sands performs a one-man show in tribute of playwright Harold Pinter in Edinburgh. A one-act anthology of the work of Harold Pinter directed by John Malkovich. Opened, Aug. 5, 2011. Reviewed, Aug. 11, 2011. Running time: 50 MIN.Performer - Julian SandsThrowing himself into the egalitarian spirit of the Edinburgh Fringe, the world's largest arts festival, John Malkovich has been spotted flyering the crowds on the city center streets. Thesp was in town as helmer of this anthology of poetry and a little prose by the late playwright Harold Pinter put together by his friend, actor Julian Sands. Delivered with sensitivity and precision, it is a performance as stripped back and elemental as Pinter's language, delivered to an aud happy to savor the British actor's every word. Sands explains his interest in Pinter goes back to his high school days when he studied "The Birthday Party," later working on scenes at drama school in London and becoming a great fan. In 1987, he starred in "Basements," a TV adaptation of two Pinter plays "The Room" and "The Dumb Waiter," playing a "menacing" character called Mr. Sands. Then, six years ago, the playwright asked him to deliver a poetry reading on his behalf. Too ill to perform it himself, the scribe was nonetheless exacting in his instructions to Sands. It was the actor's first encounter with Pinter's poetry and the basis of this performance. Sands builds the show around the romantic, personal and political poems in Pinter's "Various Voices," adding commentary from colleagues and critics, observations by the playwright's widow, Lady Antonia Fraser, and the occasional anecdote of his own. He recalls the shame of suggesting to Pinter there was a typo in one of his poems (the word "corrects" appearing where he expected to see "connects") and the withering reply he got in return. He mentions the critic who said he was scared to shake the playwright's hand for fear of the electrical charge, and gives an illuminating imitation of Pinter explaining the difference between a beat, a pause and a silence. Appearing on a bare stage in a black suit and an open-collared white shirt, Sands is poised, serious and striking, with his angular features and thinning shock of spiky blond hair. Under the no-nonsense direction of Malkovich, whom he has known since meeting on the set of "The Killing Fields," he punches out Pinter's clipped Anglo-Saxon language with a sharp attack, tilting his upper body toward us for emphasis. His performance is taut, clean and actorly. Framing the selection with Pinter's observation that his writing life was defined by "relish, challenge and excitement," Sands gives equal weight to the writer's various passions. If there's not quite as much of the political poetry as you would expect from so outspoken a human-rights campaigner, that is because Sands wants also to give a flavor of Pinter's love of cricket, of his wife and of his own life after he was diagnosed with cancer in 2002. The poetry, he argues, is not unrelated to the plays, but is more subjective and "came from himself." As celebrations go, it is an austere, ascetic and restrained performance, one that captures the pugnacity, precision and a little of the dry humor of an exacting writer. REVIEW: Magic Trip Documents Ken Kesey's Psychedelic Bus Tour Across America

Ken Kesey felt that the novel was no match for what was happening around him in 1964. After rising to literary prominence with his debut, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, in 1962, Kesey wrote Sometimes a Great Notion, a union-busting saga set in an Oregon logging town. Due in New York for the book’s publication, which coincided with the World’s Fair happening there, Kesey decided to make an event of the trip, and to document the proceedings with a creative instrument more suited to the quickening times: A 16-millimeter camera. The footage of the drive from California to the East Coast — made in a school bus swirled with psychedelic starter-kit designs and accompanied by an assortment of friends and virtual strangers — sat boxed up in a basement after a round of private showings and a few attempts at editing. The game-changing documentary Kesey and his “Merry Pranksters” envisioned never came together. Directors Alex Gibney and Alison Ellwood set out to complete the task with the benefit and befogging nostalgia of hindsight. After Kesey’s death in 2001, the footage — over 100 hours total — was turned over to archivists at UCLA, who worked to restore it, and Magic Trip is made up almost entirely of that footage, with the exception of a few animated segments and archival clips. It’s a heroic effort to justify Kesey’s instinct about designing, casting and filming a road trip to capture a pivotal moment in American culture. It’s also a pretty definitive argument for the supremacy of literature when it comes to mythologizing pivotal moments in American culture. Tom Wolfe’s Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test documents the same trip and its aftermath, and became one of the early “nonfiction novels” associated with the New Journalism movement that sprang up to translate the times. Wolfe had a number of advantages over Magic Trip, including a dominant point of view, relief from the pressure of making reams of footage of a bus full of tripping, budding hippies seem interesting, and the creative freedom to continue making Beat muse Neal Cassady look like something other than a complete and utter, gnaw-off-your-own-foot nightmare. The choice to stick with the footage was a bold one, especially since much of the sound is unusable and a true “direct cinema” salvage is impossible. Most of the images are startlingly clear, and a chronology is set up to match the voice-over, which is derived from old interviews with Kesey and, less successfully, old interview transcripts with the Pranksters “performed” by actors. Stanley Tucci serves as interlocutor, posing questions about the trip that are “answered” by the participants, another unfortunate structural choice. The “you are there”/”they were there” approach is limited both by the content of the footage and the convolution of the narrative devices, and around the time the bus hits New Orleans, desperation for distance and a guiding perspective sets in. I’d say you had to be there, but over the course of Magic Trip we learn that the majority of the people who were there didn’t want to be there. One bailed before they were 30 minutes out of their starting point, several others couldn’t wait for it to end. The combination of the recovered footage of the trip and the alternately gilded and crabby reflections on it reveal the tenuous grip of so many of our cultural myths. Though Kesey is an especially thoughtful and articulate presence — recordings from his first trip on LSD as part of a CIA experiment are the high point of the film — to 21st-century eyes his journey has the drummed-up feel of a self-regarding publicity circus. The group began wearing red and white striped “team” shirts and gave each other goofy warrior nicknames, but one of their number is dumped at the first sign of trouble, and another is left behind — ha ha — and no one notices. Romances flare up and out, and casual betrayals seethe like campsite embers as the group continues their slouch toward Astoria. Drugs are required for fun and communal feeling, and oh my God when will that meth-head Cassady shut his trap already. The truest moment in Magic Trip takes place after the predictably anti-climactic arrival in New York, where Kesey and Co. are snubbed by Timothy Leary, Jack Kerouac shows up to nurse a tall boy, and one more girlfriend is stolen for the road. Back in California, the group gathers to watch raw film from the trip as a party takes shape around them, so that we are watching footage of people watching footage from the footage we just watched. You can almost hear the boastful embellishing, the beginning of a story taking shape. Second to Kesey’s medically supervised LSD dose, it’s the most intriguing part of the documentary, and suggests the mysterious filtration process by which lasting myths are made of events that are fairly ordinary to the naked eye. The film stayed raw for a reason: Since it served as an accessory to invention both during and after the trip, its purpose was more or less spent.

'Breaking Bad' Eying Two-Season Final Run

RELATED: AMC President On 'Breaking Bad' Order, 'Walking Dead' Budget & 'Mad Men' Deal With 11 days left until the license fee deal on AMC's drama Breaking Bad is set to expire, the network and producing studio Sony Pictures Television are heading into the homestretch of their negotiations for a fifth season of the dark series starring Bryan Cranston. Despite Sony sending out feelers to other cable networks and reportedly getting interest from FX, all sides feel confident that Breaking Bad will return to AMC for what is expected to be its final chapter. Creator Vince Gilligan had made it clear that he wants to end the series after Season 5. I've learned that AMC has an offer on the table for a standard 13-episode fifth season but Sony is looking for more. People close to the matter expect the final deal to be for 13-20 episodes, possibly spread over 2 seasons. Besides pinning down the exact size of the order, a sticking point has been who will shoulder the production cost for Breaking Bad going forward. In TV, starting with Season 5, the network take over 100% of a show's production cost. In the early days of original series on basic cable, the networks didn't know quite how to handle the tricky Season 4-Season 5 transition financially and tended to cancel shows after four seasons, like Lifetime's Any Day Now. In the case of Breaking Bad, I hear AMC is asking Sony for some participation in the budget, which most recently was around $3.2 million an episode. AMC and Sony's previous license negotiation last year was also lengthy and difficult. But this time around, a renewal appeared a much easier proposition, given the series' double-digit ratings growth for the start of Season 4, including posting a series high with the season premiere. Additionally, the auxiliary market, where Breaking Bad had been far weaker than AMC's signature series Mad Men, also has picked up. Thanks in part to a savvy deal Sony made with Walmart, DVD sales for Season 3 went up double digits from Season 2, a rare feat for a series these says. And after it wraps a deal for the show, Sony has to also forge a new pact with Gilligan whose contract is also up after this season.
